Dom discusses the key points
DECENT START
It took a long time to come, but United salvaged a point at the death on Saturday afternoon and that should put them in decent spirits heading into this one. Much like many of the away games from last season, United struggled to get to grips with the opposition and struggled to find quality passes, with too much of the distribution direct and hurried. But in a similar way to last season, the team also kept going and would not give up, which is a reminder of the team spirit built up by Paul Wotton. Considering our nightmarish previous form against the Stones, a point was welcome, and 4 from two games is something to build on.
TEAM SELECTION
Unfortunately Louis Dennis suffered an injury on Saturday, and joins Callum Dolan and Sonny Fish on the side-lines. We also await news on Sonny Blu Lo-Everton who was on the receiving end of a poor lunge in the early stages at Maidstone. The good news is Munashe Sundire looks ready to come into the fray from the start, whilst we all know the quality Matt Jay possesses, so the line-up will still be strong (though the subs bench will not offer very much). After losing his place in the line-up Jay will be desperate to have a big game under the lights, and his combination with Jordan Young could take the game away from Totton if the team are on song.
JORDAN YOUNG
If you’re pinpointing the strengths of Torquay’s attack, then Jordan Young’s left foot is high up on the list! He can score from any angle and it would be no surprise if Jordan bags another one at Plainmoor on Tuesday night. It would help if United can find similar tempo and movement that was notable in the early stages of the Enfield game. Another quick start would be very welcome (without the sloppy second half!).
THE OPPOSITION
Newly promoted AFC Totton are certainly enjoying their start to their campaign, with 6 points from 2 games versus Dover and Tonbridge. Indeed the Angels were dispatched comfortably 3-0, so the Stags will come to Plainmoor optimistic about getting a result. Striker Tony Lee scored 2 on Saturday and appears to be the main danger man, whilst Totton also include two ex-Gulls in Scott Rendell and Joe Oastler. It feels like a lifetime ago since those two played for United, with memories of when Rendell scored on our return to the EFL in 2009, whilst Oastler was a regular in Martin Ling’s 2011-12 promotion chasers. Torquay should have enough quality to win this one, but AFC Totton will look forward to the challenge and could well make life difficult for us. Let’s get behind the team as always!
