Dom looks ahead to the big game
THE FINAL CURTAIN?
So here we are! The final game of the 24/25 regular season is finally upon us. We’ve been through an emotional rollercoaster this season (as ever), but it’s been an enjoyable one. The team has only played well in patches and have had too many flaws to run away with the league, but they have shown commitment and engagement in the process that has been lacking in previous seasons, they’ve also had a structure in place and a determined and motivated manager in charge to push them on. Meanwhile the supporters have completely bought into the new Torquay United, and attendances have blossomed to levels that a majority of the Yellow Army have never witnessed. So many positives can be taken out of the last year, but Paul Wotton and his team know it can only be truly classed as a successful one if promotion is achieved. That takes me onto Hemel (a).
MAKE SURE OF THE WIN
My main fear on Saturday is not losing out on the title, though that would be difficult to swallow, but failing to win our own game and the likelihood of dropping out of the top 3 places. Our away form has been sound in recent times, but it would be very good to avoid an play-off trip to the likes of Worthing and Eastbourne, because make no mistake about it, those are tough places to go. I’d imagine that Paul Wotton will ask his team to be aggressive, without taking any silly liberties that put the 3 points in danger. If Truro are winning narrowly, and we have a comfortable lead, then that is the time for taking some risks and pushing harder to close that goal difference…but ultimately it all depends on the situation as it unfolds. Many eyes will be on that score in Cornwall that’s for sure!

YOUNG AND JAY MAGIC
United’s two most talented attackers will be asked to make the difference again on Monday. Neither had their best games on Saturday against Weymouth, Young was more wasteful than usual and Jay struggled to get into the action, but as so often, they still managed goal contributions between them. Jordan Young’s magically whipped set pieces have caught out plenty of defences this season and been a massive part of our armoury. Meanwhile Matt Jay is clever at sniffing out chances inside the box and can also bang one in from outside. Both of these guys should be playing higher up the leagues that’s for sure, and if we enter the National League in 25/26, the onus will be on them to help make it a successful return.
YELLOW ARMY
So after much toing and froing, the final total for the magnificent Yellow Army heading to Vauxhall Road will be 2k, and there’s no doubt we’ll be making plenty of noise on Saturday afternoon. I’m not sure anything can ever match the tense atmosphere at Southend (a) as those final agonising minutes ticked on, but there could be something similar this time around! All we can do is push the team on and make sure we do our bit, then who knows what can happen. Forget the ifs and buts of what could have gone better throughout the season, enjoy the ride (if you can) and be proud of what your club has evolved into during the last 12 months. On our way…on our way!
