Dom discusses the key moments
MUSSA’S CHALLENGE
Mid-way through the 1st half Omar Mussa had been taken out by two defenders as he moved forward with the ball. They may have got the ball but they also got him as well. No foul given. Not long after, and perhaps still riled up by that challenge, Mussa charged to make a tackle out wide. You could tell he was never getting to the ball and caught the WSM player late. Despite immediate protests from the WSM bench, the referee decided to only brandish a yellow card to the relief of the Yellow Army. Looking at the replay, Mussa’s studs are up and the challenge is a reckless one, so he was probably fortunate to avoid an early bath and a 3 match suspension. Paul Wotton keeps rotating him back into the line-up but without much success, so unfortunately for the Moose the sub bench beckons once more.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS – MUSSA CHALLENGE
WESTON OPENER
The home team had built some steam up by this stage in the 1st half and a corner from the left was well aimed with some pace into the middle of the penalty area. More often than not Sam Dreyer gets a firm connection on it, but there is a number of players around him and it flicks into their bodies, with Dodd reacting quickly to have a pop at goal, before it eventually rebounds in off Oscar Threlkeld. Set pieces are such an important factor and failing to clear the first ball often leads to trouble, indeed Weston had come close a little earlier, so the warning was there. Scrappy stuff with some bad fortune mixed into the equation, but the home team had been the aggressor and in that respect it was no great surprise when the ball found it’s way into the net.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS – WSM GOAL
MATT JAY GOAL
After a 40 yarder on Saturday, this was a much closer finish for Jay! For this goal Matt finds space 30 yards out after a Cody Cooke knock-down and smartly picks out Jordan Young loitering on the right hand side of the penalty area. In trademark fashion Youngy cuts in on his left foot and unleashes a fairly tame shot that the goalkeeper parries. Jay is alert to the situation and shows his game smarts to creep forward past defenders, stay onside and pounce on the rebound. It’s not great keeping (he should be holding that) or defending (I’d imagine Scott Bartlett would have warned his defenders about Jordan Young’s left foot!), but it’s very good anticipation from the attacker. Hopefully much more to come from him and many others as we move into March.
