Joe dissects the key moments from a cracking win at Fortress Plainmoor!
4 MINS – WJD STRIKES AGAIN!
Another bright start from United at home, taking the lead after only 4 minutes. A big Sam Dreyer header won the ball in the middle of the park and good battling from Cody Cooke managed to release Omar Mussa. Rather than take a touch Mussa spots that WJD is on his bike and plays a lovely ball in behind the centre half, WJD takes the ball in his stride and flies forward towards goal, unleashing a lovely low driven shot from the edge of the area, catching the ‘Cap-less’ Goalkeeper by surprise and it speeds into the bottom corner. A really well taken goal from the ever-improving Loanee who is now adding an end product to his game. Running in behind the defenders from midfielders adds something different for United, and this was a perfect example.
7 MINS – YOUNG MAKES IT TWO
A neat one-two from a throw-in between Foulston & WJD releases the latter on the corner of the box, a lovely in-swinging “Buffet-Ball” from WJD is a nightmare to defend and Jordan Young steals in in front of the static Farnborough Keeper, and chests the ball into the goal. Cue persistent appeals from the keeper to the officials that he either; had two hands on the ball (he didn’t) or that Young handballed it (again, he didn’t) but the only result was a yellow card for the Farnborough No.1. 2-0 to United and a cracking start for the Yellows. United have often been ponderous in the early minutes of games, but were full of confidence and purposeful running, and got their rewards.
45 MINS – MORE REFEREEING INCOMPETENCE
A long ball is there to be won and the advancing Omar Mussa manages to nip in front of the central defender and play in Jordan Young with a brilliantly timed header. The central defender, knowing that Young is closing in on goal, then holds his head, claiming a head injury and the referee brings a halt to proceedings. No problems with that, as frustrating as it is, it’s the rules, but what you won’t see on the clip, is that despite Young being ready to test the goalkeeper, play restarts with Farnborough! Yet again more incompetency from the officials at this level takes away a great chance for United to extend their lead.
58 MINS – GOOD CHANCE GOES BEGGING FOR THE MOOSE
A long kick up field from Hamon finds Cooke, who is being marked by two Farnborough defenders, incredible strength from the United striker allows Mussa to pick up the ball in the penalty area with just the keeper to beat. It looked like a chip may be the best option as the ball is bouncing nicely, but perhaps with a cross blazed into the family stand only minutes prior playing on his mind, he tries the safe option & attempts to slide it past the goalkeeper. Unfortunately for the Moose it slides just wide of the post, a real opportunity missed to make it 3-0!
90+5 MINS – HAMON PROTECTS HIS CLEAN SHEET
The impressive Richard Chin gets past Carson on the right wing and stands a ball up to the near post, it’s met by the unmarked Matthews-Lewis who powers a header towards goal, but its too close to Hamon, who makes a decent save given that he had very little to do for the rest of the game. Whilst the defence has been getting the plaudits, the goalkeepers is also playing his part. The whistle sounds shortly after, and it’s another big win for United!
