16 MINS – DISALLOWED GOAL

It looked like the Sports had taken an early lead at Priory Lane, with an accurate left wing cross ricocheting off a United defender and past James Hamon. The near post challenge by the Eastbourne attacker is enough for the referee to give a free kick instead, and looking back at the replay this appears to be the correct decision. Torquay are lucky though because the attempts to stop the cross look lethargic and on another day the referee dismisses our claims for a foul.

33 MINS – EASTBOURNE GOAL

United’s set piece defending this season has not always been up to scratch and this is definitely something that Paul Wotton will want to improve on. This goal comes from a corner, and the high in-swinging cross is too much for James Hamon to deal with, whilst Matt Carson just can’t keep up with George Alexander who swoops smartly at the far post. It’s impossible to tell whether the ball crosses the line at that point, but the linesman is sure and gives the nod immediately. Hamon will be disappointed but there is context in that the sun is glaring in his eyes, a striker is behind him and the cross is a wicked one. Meanwhile Carson is just beaten by a striker’s instinct.

We needed a quick response and after some neat interplay we got it. Eastbourne look to have retreated at that point, and the ball moves neatly from left to right between Carson, Jenkins Davies and Hayfield, before Finley Craske finds some space with some clever movement inside the right hand edges of the box. His first touch puts it perfectly onto his right foot, and the shot is powered into the top corner, beating the keeper for pace at the near post. United need to find more of these moments, and it was a clinical finish from a player whose United career has been very much stop-start until now. That’ll do his confidence no harm at all.
