PLAYER STRENGTHS
WORK RATE – It was a tough situation for Will to come into at Torquay last season, and as the side struggled and supporters became more and more frustrated with their club, the lad could have been forgiven for asking for a recall to Argyle! But he stayed for the season and he kept plugging away in games. A willing runner off and on the ball, Will showed decent endeavour throughout a mostly horrible campaign and that’s appreciated.
GOAL-SCORING TOUCH – Will’s final total of 8 goals was a good return last season, and that showed his ability to get into the right areas and most importantly finish with aplomb. Paul Wotton will be hoping he can replicate that in a side that have recently stuttered in front of goal, and at the same time improve on his assists tally from 23/24.
WILLING TO LEARN – Still only a teenager, Will remains a young lad and one, going from last season, that is willing to learn and looking to improve on all aspects of his game. If he can build on what he did last season and find more progression in 2024/25, then this loan could be a successful one for all concerned.
CONCLUSION
Having seen Will at the Chippenham game a few weeks ago, I’m not surprised to see him return to Plainmoor and his arrival looks like a sound bit of business by Paul Wotton. WJD is not without his weaknesses as a player, with his diminutive stature often a problem against bigger opposition around the midfield areas, and he doesn’t have the sort of pace that can get him away from defenders. But I liked his attitude and work ethic last season, and he also got stuck in, gathering 11 yellow cards and 1 red for his troubles, so he’s not afraid of a challenge, even if it’s often been mistimed! He’s got the ability to play behind the strikers, or perhaps even to the left or right of Cody Cooke, if Paul Wotton decides to alter tactics in the coming weeks and that versatility adds something different to the Torquay squad and it’s attack. Welcome back Will, and good luck.
