The Ed reacts to the Bryn Consortium takeover news
BRYNG IT ON…
Firstly, excuse the poor attempt at a pun in the heading…I should really leave those to the Haywards!
It’s been a historic and frankly fantastic day to be a Torquay United supporter – Michael Westcott, Mark Bowes-Cavanagh, Tom Allen, Matt Corby, Rob Hawes, and Simon Robinson, you have played a blinder here guys, and delivered when your fragile old club needed you most.
Rewind back to January/February and the club was teetering into oblivion with ownership who had lost interest in the project (and were clearly hearing negative feedback about their ill-fated stadium plans) and a failing manager who was somehow clinging onto a job, despite overseeing a relegation, terrible football and a string of bad results against part-time teams. What did we have to look forward to? Not only short term on Saturdays when United would disappoint on the pitch, but also long term, with this regime in charge?
There was some who didn’t want Gary Johnson to leave, fearing that footballing matters could get worse (not sure how) and also some who questioned why we should criticise the owners, and believed we should accept what Torquay United had become and how it was being run. These attitudes bemused me, we were hitting rock bottom as a club, no heart, no leadership, them and us attitudes, take it or leave it, ‘One Club United?’ – yeah right.
Supporters should always push for better from their football clubs and retain hope for a brighter future. Let’s be honest Osborne and Edwards’ Torquay United had no heart and no character, there was nothing positive to cling onto and the fear of what might happen next in our history felt worth the risk as United were put up for sale, the Yellow Army gathered in unison and prospective new owners started circling Plainmoor.
Some twists and turns, and 3 months on from Osborne’s bombshell we have the Bryn Consortium, die-hard supporters who love Torquay United, we have Neil Warnock with all his personality, contacts and football experience and we are just about to assemble a hungry new squad under the management of the motivated and feisty Paul Wotton. That’s a bloody great result in my book.
Last season was perhaps my darkest as a Torquay United supporter. Going to games had become a grind, because it felt like the club had stopped caring enough, because the people in charge had no respect for the Yellow Army and we had become an embarrassment.
Now I cannot wait for the new kit to arrive, season tickets to be sold, friendlies to be played and new signings to be announced! The New Torquay United will have to prove themselves by getting results on the pitch, but it now feels like we’re in safe and trusty hands, a club ready to engage fully with supporters and make one big push together. Well done to Michael and all – we’ve got OUR CLUB back.
