Dom discusses the keys to Saturday’s game
WORK TOGETHER
Dean Moxey has stated how the squad have been brought closer together by the recent financial problems at Torquay United, well this togetherness needs to be translated onto the pitch on Saturday afternoon. The highlights of Tonbridge (a) were a horror show to watch, with players seemingly ploughing lone furrows, lacking energy and not backing each other up in all facets of the play. There’s clearly more enjoyment and harmony around since Downes took charge, but being nice guys and getting on well around the training pitch does not mean results will be gained. I want the squad angry about the last two games and ready to take the game to Hampton, this laid back dressing room needs to find some bottle, and quick.
FEEDING BRADLEY
I mentioned about Bradley Ash’s limitations as a footballer in recent weeks, but what he can do is give you a finish, as shown again by a late consolation at Tonbridge. He also made a great chance for Aaron Jarvis in the first half and was one of the few who looked switched on for a game of football. It doesn’t sound hopeful for Jarvis this week (injury suffered at Angels), so if Bradley is the main man upfront we need to play to his strengths. Get the ball in between the defenders (preferably on the deck) and Ash is a willing runner, whilst he can also get on the end of a cross if the right quality is found. Perhaps Duane will be recalled and his presence will open up space for Ash to exploit, we shall see.
PLAYING OUT…
In an ideal world I’d love Torquay to play out from the back, and use fantastic movement and skill to cut through the opposition – and in Aaron Downes’ dreams I think the team do this! But in harsh reality we’ve struggled big-time to make this work. Hampton will do their homework and sniff out opportunities to nick the ball off United and get on the attack, so we just have to be careful with this plan and be careful with the ball. More loose giveaways and it could be another long afternoon at Plainmoor.
THE HOME CROWD
It’s not easy to keep bouncing back as a Torquay United supporter and the Taunton/Tonbridge defeats were more agony to add to a plethora of pain that we’ve suffered in the last couple of years. The Yellow Army will remain loyal I know that, but we also have to make as much noise as possible at Plainmoor, push them on and hope the players respond with a performance we can be proud of. At our best we can get in the minds of the away team and help get our team over the line. Be the best you can be this Saturday.
COMMITMENT
When it comes down to it the Yellow Army just want their team giving full commitment to the cause, flying into every challenge with enthusiasm and making us believe in them (just like special guest Chris Hargreaves used to do week in week out). These guys have been paid by the supporters digging deep and should be motivated enough to do this against Hampton. Forget everything that has gone before and put everything into the coming games, if you do that then I am confident that a NLS place will be secured. We’ve shown our utter commitment and passion for Torquay United as supporters, show us you care as players. In short get bloody stuck in lads!
