FOOTBALL ON THE DECK

One of the biggest failings that could be laid at Gary Johnson’s door was his insistence on persisting with the hoofball tactics even once Jarvis was injured and our strike force was barely over 5 ft 11. There were glimpses of a better passing game at Weymouth, but it was certainly evident on Saturday. Slick passing moves, especially in that 20 minute spell after half time cut Dartford open time after time, and one particular move just before Ash made it 3-0 would have surely been a candidate for goal of the season had Dawson or McGavin managed to stick it away at the end of the move. Really refreshing to watch and certainly makes Plainmoor an enjoyable place to visit once again.

UP THE CREEK WITHOUT DAWSON

It really does make you think what might have been had Kevin Dawson been fit for the whole season, his presence on the pitch seems to transform how our side plays. His energy, tenacity, tough tackling, quick footwork and leadership in the middle of park set the benchmark for the afternoon and was key to getting the win. His continued involvement is going to be massive for the run in as we either stave off relegation (assuming 10 point deduction) or make a late run for the play offs, if the National League looks down fondly on us and fails to punish us for intending to appoint administrators.

HALSTEAD ON FORM

I’ve been critical of Halstead in the past, and again last week at Weymouth I felt he could have come and dealt with the free kick which led to their equaliser. Mark was much improved on Saturday though, commanding his box far better than usual as well as making some crucial saves! His shot-stopping can rarely be criticised but his commanding of his box can, if he can continue to improve on that then our goals against column will hopefully start to look a bit prettier!
