LAST MEETING
Saturday 12th August 2023 – Torquay United 0 Worthing FC 3, NLS
Torquay United were left searching for their first win of the season as they beaten 3-0 by Worthing at Plainmoor.
A first half header from former Gulls loanee Ricky Aguiar and second half strikes from substitutes Ollie Pearce and Reece Meekums sealed a memorable win for the Reds.
Chances were few and far between for both sides early on in the first ever meeting between the two sides. Former Gulls loanee Ricky Aguiar came closest to opening the scoring for the visitors with a long range strike that skimmed the top of the cross bar on 17 minutes. Worthing took the lead in the 31st minute when Aguiar headed home a cross from Nicky Wheeler from close range. The Gulls threatened an equaliser four minutes before the break when Aaron Jarvis nodded a cross from Jack Stobbs wide.
In the second half, United stepped up their search for a leveller as Asa Hall connected with a free-kick from Stobbs, but missed the target. Moments later, Brad Ash looked well placed to score but he saw his effort blocked. Aguiar threatened again for the visitors on 55 minutes with a shot from distance that Gulls keeper Mark Halstead parried away.
A minute later, Greg Luer forced a routine save from Halstead as the visitors looked to add to their tally. In the 65th minute, Luer went close again as he was denied by a one-handed stop from Halstead. Four minutes later, sub Ollie Pearce added a second for the visitors – three minutes after coming off the bench. Pearce’s fellow sub Joao Luque found himself through on goal on 78 minutes, but Halstead’s reflexes denied him. With four minutes later, Ash tested Worthing with a shot that was palmed away by Reds keeper Roco Rees.
As injury time approached, sub Reece Meekums netted a third for the visitors with an angled effort – as they followed up their opening day win with another victory.
