TT INTERVIEW

James answers questions about his team Exeter City
PRE-SEASON
Our pre-season so far has been wins at Tiverton, Mousehole and Taunton. We also drew with Bath. Following our game with Torquay we finish with Coventry at home. These two games I would hope to see a more settled team in the final build-up.
SATISFACTORY 22/23?
Yes, we had a few injuries and players leaving in the January which did unsettle things after a good solid start to the season. When the fixtures came out I knew we needed to be close to the 50 points before April as this looked a tough month, and it turned out we played 6 of the top 7 in that period. We were fortunate to be comfortable in the table by then and we could start looking towards the next season.
THE MANAGER
I was a little sceptical, as being a fan of ECFC we have either had long serving managers or someone promoted from within – however I like some of Gary Caldwell’s ideas and this season will be a good insight as he has been able to start building his team.
NEW SIGNINGS
This week we have signed ex-Premier League player Tom Carroll on a 1 year deal and I’m excited to see what impact he can make. Season long loans have been a keeper from Villa, a young midfielder from Brentford and a winger from Chelsea. There is a permanent signing of another midfielder who has previously played for our manager at Partick Thistle, plus some other promising additions.
KEY PLAYERS
There have been quite a few departures and the team will be looking different this season, so I would say the key players are from last season with Nombe upfront who can chase down the ball, and Harry Kite in midfield who I would see as a replacement for Archie Collins.
NEXT SEASON
I hope with all the changes this year the team settle quickly and aim for another mid-table finish. A couple more additions would be good especially upfront, but to also help boost squad numbers.
