Another away defeat (at Bromley), and another penalty for Brendan to deal with! It does feel like the referees don’t have much love for us; very little goes our way even at home. We are an honest team and that doesn’t help. We don’t fall down at the slightest touch, and when we are down we get up sharpish.
I can’t complain about that, Nico wants us to win fairly and squarely and that’s admirable. I’ve witnessed so many teams eat up the clock at Plainmoor with organised time wasting. Whether this is slow set pieces, staying down to milk injuries or taking an age of substitutions. It’s all worked unfortunately!
The team’s job is to rise above all that and get things done anyway. Last season the boys did it, rolling up their sleeves and believing the 90 minutes was theirs for the taking. Smithy and Mac were such a big influence on this approach; replacing them has been Kevin’s biggest headache and he’s had more than most!
The search goes for more players with the right mentality, I’m sure there’s loads looking and hoping for employment but can they enhance United’s belief and help us break these away blues – that’s the question?
Nico does have one thing in his favour, he has settled back into a system that suits the team better. 3 in midfield makes us harder to beat, with the defenders getting more protection. It will be interesting to see if Damon gets a regular place back soon. Maybe in front of Verna, even though our vice-captain has been doing ok in recent games.
Onto Macclesfield and we need to take control of our destiny – sooner rather than later. Will any reinforcements be available? GI haven’t officially taken over yet I believe, so the budget is limited.
Nico needs a centre back and target man to match up physically at both ends, and he needs backing from owners. He ticked one box with Racine who looked the part until the major injury, even going by Torquay United standards that was unlucky!

Good article, it does seem like we are too honest but like Nico I think I prefer it that way. It does seem you need to be a bit underhanded in this game to get anywhere. Lets hope the next referee is on our side for once. RH
